People are always asking me "what is Sahaja Yoga?". It is hard to define because sahaja yoga encompasses the whole universe.
Sahaja means "spontaneous" or "easy" or "born within", Yoga means "Union" with the Self. Sahaja yoga, therefore, means the easy, spontaneous yoga.
What is the Self? It is our Spirit which is the reflection of the Supreme Spirit of the Cosmos.
Yoga means meditation because meditation is the state of Union with the Self.
When we become the Self we start witnessing the actions of our body and our mind as if we are something separate, that’s because we are, we are the Spirit, the Soul, which is Eternal in nature yet passes through many lifetimes along it’s journey to the Source like a river winding it’s way through the mountains and plains and finally reaching it’s destination in the Sea.
Ask a river if it knows about the sea and it may say, "oh no, that doesn’t exist, it’s a myth", but eventually the river meets the Sea and becomes one with it, that’s what sahaja yoga is like. It isn’t important if you believe in the existence of your Soul/Spirit or of a Supreme Spirit, a Divine Being, but once you feel your own Divinity within then you have prooved it to yourself. In any case you cannot avoid it because now is the time in our evolution when we have to discover this.
To practice sahaja yoga one doesn’t need to be religious. In fact sahaja yoga is entirely scientific. Everything that one experiences is verifiable on the central nervous system (CNS).
Everything starts with Self Realization. Self- Realization is the awakening of your own spiritual energy, called Kundalini, which resides inside your sacrum bone at the base of the spine.
When this Kundalini energy is awakened, it goes up your spine and passes through seven chakras (energy centres) & nourishes them. This energy is very powerful, because this is YOUR spirit, your inner spiritual energy that makes you see what is right and what is wrong.
But all these benefits are the minimum Sahaja Yoga can give. the real blessing is when you can SHARE, what you got.
By this kundalini awakening we enter the state of thoughtless awareness also described by Guru Nanak (founder of the Sikh religion) as sahaja sthithi or the state of sahaja (spontanaiety).
Sahaja Yoga is not about rules, it is totally spontaneous, just like the process of Self Realization itself.
Sahaja Yoga doesn’t tell you: do not smoke or do not drink, or don’t do THIS & THAT. But when this energy awakened you get rid of all your bad habits automatically.
For example: assume you have a rope in your hand and it is dark in the room. Somebody comes in and tells you that you have a snake in your hand, but you do not believe that person; Let’s say that later you light a match and you see that there is a snake indeed in your hand. Your natural reaction: you throw the snake away. Same phenomena happens with the bad habits.
People quit drugs overnight - that is a fact, if you want to investigate this claim or any others it’s no problem. In fact we welcome OBJECTIVE investigations into sahaja yoga & the amazing results of practicing sahaja yoga. Unfortunately very few people seem to want to do this kind of investigation, if you’re a scientist or phD student and you’d like to conduct some more research please contact us about it.
When you meditate, you feel a cool breeze on the palms, on the top of your head, and along the face; this cool breeze represents this awakened energy, you feel it physically (the cool breeze of the holy ghost, as it is named in the Bible). So when you get this cool breeze you can enlighten others.
You can give self-realization to others with the help of the divine energy. And when people start to feel it, their face lights up and smile appears on their happy face, just the way it was with you, when you first time experienced it. And THAT kind of giving… provides you with even more JOY.
You can also feel other’s cool breeze (energy), and therefore you can correct the wrong centres using the power of that energy (which is just giving vibrations with your hand to the particular centre, because all the physical/emotional problems occur if our centres are not clean). Therefore, you can heal others and yourself.
What I’ve told you is just a brief touch on what is Sahaja Yoga, and what are the possibilities , but again everyone is different and every one experiences Sahaja Yoga in their own way, and one of the things that unite these different experiences is JOY.
Sahaja Yoga is ALWAYS FREE, you cannot pay for something that was born with you.
The method of Self-Realization was founded by Sri Mataji Nirmala Devi.
